Welcome to the Moominhouse!

The Moominhouse is the Moomin family’s home, a cozy haven and launchpad for adventures, and a place where everyone’s welcome, just as they are. In Tove Jansson’s stories, it stands for belonging, equality, and a warm roof over your head (even for the strangest guests). A brand-new Moomin 80 anniversary exhibition tells the story of how the Moomin family finds their blue house. Step inside the lovingly recreated parlour and soak up the magical atmosphere! You’ll also get to see original drawings by Tove Jansson of the house’s many curious visitors and on-goings. And don’t miss the delightful Moominhouse tableau built by Tove, Tuulikki Pietilä, and their friends – a reminder of the importance of play. Welcome to the Moominhouse!

Moomin 80 – The Big Birthday Celebration on 9 August

Join us on Saturday, August 9th from 12–5pm at Tampere Hall to celebrate with joyful activities for the whole family! The party starts already at 11:45am with wreath-laying of the Moomintroll statue in Sorsapuisto Park. The birthday festivities at Tampere Hall include cake, a ball, a jewellery workshop, puppet theatre, and an animation marathon. The entry for the party is free (puppet theatre from 15 €). Admission to the Moomin Museum is only €4 (always free for children under 7). In the Studio’s nonstop workshop we are modeling miniature Moominhouses all day from 10am to 5pm. There are also guided tours in Finnish for children. Come celebrate Moomin 80 anniversary the way Tove Jansson would’ve loved – with creativity, play and togetherness!

Model your own Moominhouse in our Studio!

This summer our visitors will sculpt miniature Moominhouses inspired by the new Welcome to the Moominhouse! exhibition. You can draw inspiration from the museum’s large Moominhouse tableaux or imagine your very own version of a Moominhouse.

Moomin House - our pride and joy

On the lower level of the museum, you’ll find our centrepiece exhibit: a five-storey, over two-metre-tall tableaux of the Moomin House. The enchantingly detailed model was crafted by Tuulikki Pietilä, Dr Pentti Eistola, and Tove Jansson, taking them three years to build. It was unveiled at the Bratislava Biennial of Illustration in 1979, after which it toured the Nordic countries. Today it is a permanent exhibit that can be seen only at the Moomin Museum.

The city of courage and openness – Tampere is Home of the Moomin Museum

The Moomins and the people of Tampere have a lot in common. Earthiness, eccentricity and the courage to embark on an adventure. It’s easy to come to Tampere – as if the doors were always open. There is the courage to build something new, to go where no one has gone before. Could there be a more fitting place for the world’s only Moomin Museum?
