Making of Moomin Museum exhibition opened!

The first plans for the new Moomin Museum were made almost two years ago. Now, Tampere Hall is offering a glimpse behind the scenes in the Making of Moomin Museum exhibition in the Winter Garden. The first moving crates for the new Moomin Museum have arrived, and they tell stories of making of the museum and offer glimpses into its future.

Making of Moomin Museum – stories from behind the scenes

In the wintry landscape covered in snowflakes, the inhabitants of Moominvalley, from Moomintroll to Fillyjonk, look in wonder at the crates together with the visitors. Peek into the crates to learn the story of the Moomin Museum! True to the 12 Moomin books written and illustrated by Tove Jansson, the “Making of” exhibition has 12 crates – one for each book and each with its own fascinating adventure.

The moving crates, modelled after real art transport crates, are filled with secrets. There are also videos which depict the work done at museums behind the scenes. For example, conservators are vital for museums, but few visitors know what they do. One of the videos shows the preservation of the Bathhouse tableaux, starting at the moment when it is picked up from the warehouse by museum technicians and unpacked for the conservator. The conservator assesses the condition of the work and starts the meticulous preservation work, which involves cleaning every little nail on the bathhouse, removing glue stains from Hemulen’s tail, and inspecting the veil and garland of the Lady of the Cold.

Each crate also contains a treasure from the Moomin collection. Some of the treasures have never been on display before. Often, the collections of museums are much more extensive than the pieces exhibited to the public. For example, Tove Jansson donated her Paraphernalia collection to the Tampere Art Museum to complement the actual artworks, including studies and sketches of the tableaux, Moomin characters, boxes full of materials, colouring instructions for the figurines, and a range of other Moomin-related items.
